1984년 10월의 어느날 밤, 밥 겔도프는 아내와 함게 BBC TV 뉴스를 시청하고 있었다.
그 때, 그들의 느긋함을 깬 화면이 나오기 시작했다. 가난가 기아에 굶주린 아디오피아 난민들의 모습...
뉴스가 끝난 후, 그에게는 걷잡을 수 없는 슬픔과 충격이 밀려 들어왔고, 자선기금을 모으기 이한 앨범을 제작하기로 마음을 먹는다.
그는 곧 친구들에게 연락해서 자신의 뜻을 알리기 시작했고, 그룹 울트라복스(Ultravox)의 리더인 미지 우어의 도움으로 밥은 곡 하나를 완성할 수 있었다.
그리고, 미지와 밥의 설득으로 수많은 영국 뮤지션들이 하나 둘 모이기 시작했다.

밥의 노력은 그뿐만이 아니었다.
마치 무명가수처럼 대형 음반회사를 직접 발로 찾아다니며 앨범제작을 의뢰했다.
물론, 무료로 해주어야 하며, 제작사의 이익은 단 0퍼센트도 챙겨가지 않아야 한다는 조건을 걸고 말이다.

1984년 11월 25일, 영국 런던의 한 스튜디오로 폴 영, 필 콜린스, 듀란듀란-사이먼 르본,존테일러,닉로즈, 웸-조지 마이클, 퀸-로저 테일러(드러머), 컬쳐클럽-보이조지, U2-보노, 스팅, 데이빗 보위, 조디 워틀리, 바나나라마, 스펜다우 발렛, 쿨 앤더 갱 등 약 40명의 당대의 영국 톱 스타들이 한 자리에 모여 들었다.
이날 모여든 이들에게 붙여진 이름은 Band Aid. 이들이 힘을 합쳐 부른 노래가 바로 이 Do they know it's christmas다.

그렇게 녹음된 Do they know it's christmas는 크리스마스를 앞둔 1984년 12월 10일 세상에 나왔다.

이날 싱글로 발매된 이 음반은 발매 직후 UK 싱글 차트 정상에 올랐고 이듬해 1월에는 발매 3주만에 3백만장의 판매고를 돌파하며 당시까지 영국 역사상 가장 많이 팔린 싱글의 신기록을 경신했다.

이 기록은 후에 엘튼 존의 Candle in the wind에 의해 깨지게 되지만 현재까지도 355만 장의 판매고로 역대 2위의 기록을 유지하고 있다.

음악도 좋았지만 사람들은 음악에 담긴 선의에 높은 점수를 주었고 기꺼이 음반을 사 주었다.

앞서 말했다시피 밴드에이드와 Do they know it's christmas에 자극받아 라이브에이드와 we are the world가 탄생했던 것도 잘 알려진 사실.

그런 점에서 Do they know it's christmas가 싱글 발매된 1984년 12월 10일은 음악을 통한 세상의 구원, 착한 음악의 승리의 날로 기억될 수 있을 것이다.
